J. Scott Cottingham has been a full-time family law attorney in Utah since 1994, and has been handling collaborative family law cases since 2002. He has the knowledge and experience to assist you in divorce, separation, paternity, modification, estate planning, and probate matters. This includes large marital estates, complex custody disputes, and high-conflict couples. Scott works well with other collaborative attorneys, mental health professionals, financial professionals, and the other party while still advocating for his clients. He encourages both parties to speak freely in collaborative sessions so that each side is heard and what is important to each party is understood. From there the parties, with the help of the professional team, can search for solutions that give each party as much of what they want as possible. The needs of the children are of primary importance. Scott graduated from the Univ. of Michigan with a B.A. degree in English in 1986. He graduated from the Univ. of Utah law school in 1989, passed his bar exams, and began practicing in Utah in October of 1989. He has been with his current law firm since 2004.
